About type 1 diabetes

Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is a disease that impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose (glycemia). It is divided into several types, according to the causes. The most common type of diabetes is type 2, which is a civilization disease and is directly associated with unhealthy lifestyle and obesity.

Game MyDiabetic deals with another type of diabetes - type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary for a proper use of sugar (glucose). Insulin lowers the amount of sugar in the bloodstream, without insulin the blood sugar level increases and it leads to many complications.

There is no way to fully cure this disease. Treatment of type 1 diabetes consists in replacing the function of the damaged pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes must self-monitor their blood glucose levels (the concentration of sugar in the blood), undergo insulin therapy and control their lifestyle.
